- There is a clear rise in female betting activity online and around women’s sports. In the US, around 36% of women engage in some form of gambling, and research indicates that about 20% of women aged 18–49 have an online sports betting account, with millions of women joining sportsbook apps in just the last few years.
In Europe, men still dominate online gambling by volume, accounting for roughly two‑thirds of the market in 2024, but female participation is growing at an estimated 8% compound annual growth rate - particularly using mobile phones as devices to place sports bets. - The European Commission approved Finland’s key draft bills for gambling reform on 8 November 2025, confirming the shift from a monopoly to a licensing model for online gambling (including sports betting). Licence applications opening in January 2026, and licensed online operations (sports betting, online casino, etc.) expected to launch in January 2027.
- In the UK, analysts and trade press are flagging that the steep new remote‑gambling duties could trigger closures of high‑street betting shops and weaker online brands over the next 12–24 months.
- A wider U.S. debate is now openly grilling the industry on things like VIP perks for heavy losers and limiting sharp winners, which makes for some uncomfortable testimony and quotes that don’t exactly flatter the major brands.
